Zahle & the Bekaa
Riverside restaurants in Zahle, wineries across the valley and the Umayyad ruins of Anjar.

Zahle sits at the edge of the Bekaa valley, about 55 km from Beirut, or an hour by car over the mountains.
The town is known for the open-air restaurants along the Berdawni river, where families come for long Lebanese lunches. Around it, the Bekaa is Lebanon's main wine region, and wineries such as Ksara and Kefraya welcome visitors for tours and tastings.
Further south, Anjar has the ruins of an 8th-century Umayyad city, listed by UNESCO, and the Roman temples of Baalbek are about 40 minutes to the north.
A guesthouse or villa here suits couples and groups who want food, wine and history in one weekend. Best time to go: April to October, with the grape harvest in September and October.
