Jbeil (Byblos)

A UNESCO World Heritage town by the sea, with an old harbour, a crusader castle and sandy and rocky beaches, 40 minutes from Beirut.

Jbeil, known to the world as Byblos, is about 37 km north of Beirut, around 40 minutes by car. It is counted among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

The heart of the town is its small old harbour, the crusader castle and the archaeological site next to it, and the restored souk with its cafés, craft shops and restaurants. In summer the Byblos International Festival brings concerts to a stage by the sea.

Jbeil has both sandy and rocky beaches, and beach resorts with chalets just outside the old town. It is a good base for families: everything is close, the old town is easy to walk, and Beirut is near enough for a day trip. Villas in the hills behind Jbeil give you sea views and cooler evenings.

Best time to go: May to October for the sea, and all year round for the old town and its restaurants. Summer festival nights sell out early, so book your stay first.
