Ehden

A mountain summer town with red-roofed stone houses, a lively main square and the Horsh Ehden nature reserve.

Ehden is a mountain town in the Zgharta district of North Lebanon, about 120 km from Beirut, usually a drive of two hours or a little more. Families from the coast have spent their summers here for generations, and the town comes alive from June to September.

The centre of town life is the Midan, the main square, lined with cafés and restaurants that stay busy late into the evening. Above the town, the Horsh Ehden nature reserve protects one of the richest forests in Lebanon, with cedar, fir and juniper trees and walking trails for all levels.

Ehden suits families and groups who want long summer evenings, cool air and traditional Lebanese food. Many houses for rent are old stone homes with red-tiled roofs and gardens, which are ideal for a family gathering.

Best time to go: June to September. Many houses and restaurants close or open less often in winter, so check with the owner before booking outside summer.
