Chouf
Green mountain villages, the Beiteddine palace and the cedar forests of the Shouf Biosphere Reserve, an hour from Beirut.

The Chouf is the mountain area south-east of Beirut, with villages such as Deir el Qamar, Beiteddine and Barouk about 45 km from the capital, roughly an hour by car.
Beiteddine Palace, built in the 19th century, is the best-known sight, and its courtyards host the Beiteddine Festival every summer. Nearby, Deir el Qamar is one of the best-preserved traditional villages in Lebanon, with its stone square, old mosque and palaces.
Higher up, the Al-Shouf Cedar Nature Reserve is the largest nature reserve in the country and protects some of the last great cedar forests, including the Barouk cedars. It has well-marked trails for walking and is beautiful in every season.
A villa in the Chouf suits families and groups who want green views, fresh air and calm, with Beirut and the southern coast within easy reach. Best time to go: April to November.
