Bcharre & the Cedars

Cabins and chalets above the Qadisha Valley, next to the ancient Cedars of God, with skiing in winter.

Bcharre sits on the edge of the Qadisha Valley in North Lebanon, about 125 km from Beirut, a drive of around two and a half hours. The valley and the nearby Forest of the Cedars of God are together listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

The town is the birthplace of the writer Khalil Gibran, and the Gibran Museum, in an old monastery above the town, is one of the most moving visits in Lebanon. Below, the Qadisha Valley hides old monasteries and hermitages cut into the rock, reached on foot by trails of different lengths.

Higher up, the Cedars area has a ski resort that usually opens from December to April, and cabins and chalets that are perfect for a winter weekend by the fire. In summer it is one of the coolest places in the country.

Best time to go: all year round. Winter for snow, spring and autumn for hiking the valley, summer to escape the heat.
