Aley, Bhamdoun and Sofar line the old Beirut to Damascus road in the hills above the capital, between 17 and 30 km from Beirut.
For more than a century these towns have been where families spend the summer, for the cooler air and the views over Beirut and the coast. Sofar still has its grand old hotel from the early 1900s, and Aley's town centre has shops, cafés and restaurants that stay busy on summer nights.
Many large villas here have gardens and private pools, which makes the area a good fit for family gatherings and longer summer stays.
